We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, like a child in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations. ~ Anaïs Nin
Maybe you can relate – many years ago now, I was running very fast, pushing my body, and filling my days with so much activity that I barely had time to breathe.
Maybe that seems normal, but the problem was, I should have known better. After all, I know about the body and breath. I am a relational somatic (body) therapist and teacher of Movement as Medicine & Waking Up Through Movement workshops, classes and programs – focused on connecting to, noticing and listening to your body, mind, and heart.
At that time, I didn’t know how to stop the cycle of busyness, exhaustion and overwhelm.
A lot of things seemed like huge boulders I had to push up a big hill. I was in overdrive, in a stress-cortisol loop. I began to understand for myself how patterns of overdrive and overwhelm impact our body.
My body was telling me what was happening. I just did not know how to stop and begin to understand the deeper issues. That is so true about what’s happening for a lot of us. We know there’s something wrong, but we’re stuck in a pattern that keeps us in loop of the same behavior, over and over.
When we’re so used to feeling stressed, emotionally drained, and at a loss of how to make sense of your life. Being in a chronic stress-cortisol loop is not so easy to switch on and off. Rather, it is a set of deeply embedded cultural and emotional patterns driven by a message that is mostly unconscious.
Sometimes our inner voices say that you have no worth unless you are busy and productive, that self-care is selfish, and that listening to my body is a frivolous privilege.
Overdrive patterns are the compulsion to do, the compulsion to be needed, the compulsion to be wanted, and the compulsion to have people in my life to nourish all the parts that feel empty in you.
Your nervous system may be out of balance – and using somatic practices, Somatic Experiencing, Integrated Body Therapy, movement and breath – you can learn to listen to the drive of egoic voices and all the limited beliefs that accompanied them.
As I did, you can began again to listen to your body. To listen to your breath – and I knew that if I listen deeply and honestly, my body would lead the way.
You can unravel where your body is holding these messages of compensation and grief. You can express what is underneath the habits of overdrive and survival.
You can learn to stop and feel the void; the void that comes when compulsive behaviors are actually left to heal without covering them up with new addictions.
When you find yourself in stress-overwhelm cycle, you can begin to recognize that there are some old fears surfacing and some new feelings waiting to be revealed.
