In the Flow – Rewire Your Nervous System for a New Experience of Stress, Anxiety or Depression.

March 13, 2017

“Its not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it.” – Hans Selye

When we experience difficult, stressful or overwhelming events, we need support to help us move the experience through our bodies.

What’s your experience of yourself in your life? Not your life itself, but your experience of it. The running commentary that may dominate or overwhelm your inner experience of life.

Or maybe it’s a lack of feeling – a numbness, a lack of aliveness or a disconnection from life.

Life is like a flowing river or stream – often things are flowing along quite nicely, and then something happens to throw us off course or to allow us to feel overwhelming emotions.

Together, we will slow down, and find a way to be with your experience of life in ways that will allow you to be with emotional or physical pain – to create a new pattern for your nervous system – and find a new experience of your body feeling stress, anxiety or pain – while being in your body in the here & now.

We will touch your difficult feelings, find a way to stay present, while also noticing the feelings in our body. We may notice that we have a protective layer around us that is trying to help us stay safe, and simultaneously trying to help us find balance and healing within ourselves. Sometimes we may get stuck in a chronic stressed state – feeling irritable, angry, sad, depressed, anxious or withdrawn – and we don’t know what to do to change this.

We may try lots of ways to change our mood or stress level, and still, we return again and again to a very familiar way of being – that feels overwhelming or stuck, and seemingly endless. We may numb it with alcohol or drugs, or immersing ourselves in work, relationships or spending time alone.

There is a way to rewire your nervous system and create a lasting experience of being in the flow of your life. There are processes and ways of being that we will use as tools to work together to change your nervous system experience and create new possibilities for your life.

In terms of stress, addiction and destructive habits, neuroscience tells us that we need to find a way to be with pain, because the more you try to hide from it or numb it, the more pain you create.

As a relational, body-focused therapist, I understand the important interconnection between the biology and the sensations in the body – along with the role of compassion and non-judgemental understanding in rewiring your nervous system to create a new and often improved response of stress, anxiety or depression – in your body.

To begin, we will:

1) Slow things down – move beyond your troubling story and be with the feelings in your body.

2) Be in the Here & Now together – notice where your attention and energy goes in the present moment – whether your are drawn to an active fight or flight body response or a frozen or numb response – or a mixture of the all of this.

3) Allow in a supportive presence to notice when you check out or move away from your sensations and feelings in the body.

When we allow our attention to stay focused on the here & now, and notice how our nervous system is orienting itself – we get curious and wonder, what is here now?

Let supported awareness into your life. Rediscover your own happiness and gratitude for your life. Move through discomforting behaviours, thoughts, and actions that are holding you down, and a gain a better understanding for what’s happening in your body (and mind) and how it can be moved through and expressed physically.

When we can attend to your nervous system in new ways, we can begin to uncover and tap into a brand new sense of aliveness, that may be covered up right now with our various automatic responses to life, that we may feel we have little control over.

As I work with you, you will recognize that you are not just your mind – you are a body – and breath, as well as movement. Together, we will pay attention to all of your experience of life – Body, Mind & Heart.

Working together one-on-one – you’ll have a safe place to explore your emotions, sensations, and stressful events that are happening now, or have happened in the past.

Allow yourself to be supported.

See what happens when you surrender to this moment.

To join someone on their journey, you must first be welcomed in.

love Kim, xoxo.

I've wanted to do this for a while and I'm so glad I did - I trust myself more now, I feel more calm and open - working together has changed the course of my life.
